Anemia

• Anemia: Hgb < 13.5 ♂, 12 ♀

• Microcytic (<80 MCV)

  • Missing something:

    • Fe def, thalassemia, sickle cell, sideroblastic

• Normocytic (80-100)

  • blood loss, ↓/deficient synthesis

    • Intravascular hemolysis (usually acute)

    • Extravascular (can be chronic)

    • Severe hemolysis can have intravascular and extravascular feature

• Macrocytic (>100)

  • Folate or B12 deficiency

    • B12 has ↑ MMA ➔ neuro sx

    • Both have ↑ homocysteine
